Westfield Paddock Caravan Site Review – Northumberland

The surprise that wasn't...

After years of watching our parents travel the UK and beyond in their motorhome, we finally found ourselves in a position to follow in their footsteps and buy our first motorhome. Something we’re both incredibly proud and excited about.

As you can imagine, the excitement was too much and we couldn’t wait to show our parents our much-loved motorhome, Atlas. So, we decided the best thing to do would be to surprise them by booking onto Westfield Paddock Caravan Site where we knew they’d be.

Turns out, we’re terrible liars and couldn’t surprise our parents without looking like we were hiding a body. 😂

Thank you, Kevin & Carolyn, but it wasn’t to be…

The owners, Kevin & Carolyn, were fantastic and so accommodating. We made the call and explained the situation and instantly it was like they wanted to be part of the plan. What that plan was, we had no idea, but they were in on it.

They agreed to book us onto the site for two days and position us on the pitch next to our parents, even going as far as not putting our names on the check-in board. It’s like they’d done this before and, to be honest, they were that good, they even had us guessing if we were actually booked onto the campsite. 🤣

As we both waited patiently for them to arrive taking it in turns peering from the window, sniggering like we were the clever ones little did we know the joke was on us!

As they pulled up to the campsite gate, our cunning plan to surprise them started to unravel as we saw them smirking and laughing behind their hands.

I mean… what idiot plans a surprise with his Find My Friends / Location turned on?

Yes, you guessed it… GAZ!!! 😂

A quiet pitch, with everything you need

Ok, so our plan to surprise the parents was a complete failure, but the decision to join them turned out to be one of the best ones we’ve made. Not just because we’d get to spend some time with family, but because the site and location were pretty much perfect… oh, and the weather too. How lucky were we!

Campsite entrance with a gravel access road leading to motorhome and caravan pitches, surrounded by hedges and trees, with hanging flower baskets on the wooden fence.

Sometimes when you pull up to a campsite, you just know instantly if it’s going to be a good one, and this one gave us that warm, fuzzy feeling inside. The entrance was welcoming and check-in was simple. Find your name and pitch number on the board, park up and that’s it.

The site itself was well maintained, with 10 gravel pitches equally spaced around the edges, each one divided up by a small hedge row.

Depending on what you book, the pitch comes with an easily accessible charging point and water supply… something we think all pitches should adopt. 😉

The Facilities & Location

One of the first things we investigate is the poop drop. For some people, it’s the local area or the beach… nah, not for us. Straight to the poop drop, because condition is everything. 😂

Safe to say, it passed the inspection. Clean, well maintained and even positioned in an enclosed area, which is a bonus because there’s nothing worse than a queue gathering behind you, as if they’re waiting to inspect what you had to eat the night before.

Sorry… that’s a disgusting thought, but sometimes that’s the reality of motorhome life.

The only thing we weren’t quite sure about was where to empty the grey water. After some top investigation work by Major Hosty, we found a sign basically telling us to chuck our grey water over the fence line. I suppose it’s a good way of watering the plants and trees… just as long as people aren’t using chemicals to wash their dishes.

We must say, it did feel slightly awkward and mischievous, even though there was a sign telling us to do it.

After inspection duties were complete, it was time to check out the local offerings, and for anyone who hasn’t been to Seahouses, it certainly doesn’t lack things to do. From boat tours to the Farne Islands, for a spot of twitching (bird spotting), or maybe a trip over to Holy Island / Lindisfarne for a little intellectual history lesson, either way, you’ll have plenty to choose from.

Seahouses itself is a lovely coastal village with plenty of shops, pubs and amenities, so I’m sure you’ll find lots to keep you busy. For us, we love a good walk and a pint of the black stuff, so it was off to the pub we went… because later we had a BBQ planned.

After a few drinks with the fam, it was back to the site for a BBQ, where Major Hosty played master chef, putting all of his culinary skills on display, starting off with the Grand Artisanal Beef Disc of Gastronomic Excellence.

Before moving onto the classic sausage, or as Anna would call it, Wykwintna Wędzona Kiełbasa Wieprzowa “No idea 🤔” translate tells me it’s (An exquisite Smoked Pork Sausage).

As we talked into the evening, the travelling Hosty’s were very complimentary of Westfield Paddock Caravan Site and, considering they’re retired freedom seekers, they’ve seen both the good, the bad and the ugly.

So, it was nice to get their approval. In fact, it was agreed right there, with a mouthful of sausage, that Major Hosty had taken a real fondness to the site and announced they’d be back.

And when he said they, he really meant we’ll be back…

That slip of the tongue was obviously a mistake because later they surprised us with a year’s membership to the Caravan and Motorhome Club. So either they want us to travel with them, or they’ve just made a mistake that could have some huge stalkerish consequences.

A Good Day, Good Night

As the evening conversation drifted from how lovely the site was to now being members of the Caravan and Motorhome Club, it was time to settle down for the evening.

But Anna took it a little too far. Rather than getting into our own bed, she somehow found her way into her father-in-law’s bed!🤣

After convincing Anna to leave her father-in-law’s bed, it was back to Atlas where we talked about just how nice it was to not only spend time with family, something we’ve dreamed about for many years, but also just how nice Westfield Paddock Caravan Site really was.

For the location and facilities, £30 per night is very respectable because, as we’ve said before, sometimes you get what you pay for, and that sometimes means compromising.

But honestly, we didn’t have to compromise on anything.

And as Hosty kind of said… “we’ll be back.”
